Its main purpose is twofold: to promote the entry into force of the CTBT, and to establish a global verification regime in preparation for the Treaty's entry into force. WebIn 2024, the CTBTO has ensured that youth have a seat at the table in UN fora to make their voices heard, in line with the UN Security Council Resolution 2250 (2015) on Youth, peace and security, such as a briefing by a CYG member to the UN Security Council, held in September 2024 under the presidency of Ireland to mark the CTBT’s 25th anniversary.

WebDrawing upon the considerable existing body of technical material related to the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, the National Academy of Sciences reviewed and assessed the key technical issues that arose during the Senate debate over treaty ratification. In addition to the IMS, C&C and OSI, the verification regime of the CTBT includes also the fourth element of Confidence-Building Measures. This requires States Parties to the treaty to notify the Organization, if possible in advance, of any chemical explosion using 300 tonnes or greater of TNT-equivalent blasting material to be detonated. This is required in order to contribute to the timely resolution of any compliance concerns and to assist in the calibration of IMS stations.
